10-Team Mock Draft From #3 Position (8/8/2024)
Results of my first Fantasy Football mock draft this year on NFL.com. I did this one with no preparation at all just to see what it would be like. Ten team, standard snake draft, PPR, 2 WR+Flex. Thursday August 8th, 2pm PDT.
Drafting from the #3 spot:
Round 1: Ja'Marr Chase WR. McCaffrey and Tyreek Hill went first. CeeDee Lamb (holdout situation) and Justin Jefferson (significant QB downgrade) were available, but it's probably more interesting to consider whether taking Breece Hall (or Bijan Robinson) here is worthwhile. Best NFL projections for taking WR 1st and RB 2nd are: CeeDee Lamb (325.9) + Isiah Pacheco (237.9) = 547.8. Best NFL projections for taking RB 1st and WR 2nd are: Breece Hall (259.7) + Drake London (239.2) = 508.9, or more than 2 points per game! That's pretty significant; so take the WR first from this spot.
Round 2: Kyren Williams RB. Isiah Pacheco and Derrick Henry were available. Kyren seems to have the more locked-in role to me.
Round 3: Cooper Kupp WR. Two years ago he was setting fantasy football records. If he stays healthy, he seems like a much better bet than Michael Pittman, Chris Olave, or Mike Evans. Devon Achane was available here, but he'll still be in a timeshare.
Round 4: James Cook RB. Josh Allen was still available, but I think this year it makes sense to wait on QB. Amari Cooper and DJ Moore were the top WRs available, but here it makes sense to grab a good RB2.
Round 5: Mark Andrews TE. I was also planning to wait on TE, but getting a quality one here seemed better than the other options. Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes, Stefon Diggs and Tee Higgins, Alvin Kamara were all available.
Round 6: Malik Nabers WR. If the New York Giants offense is really going to run through Nabers, this probably isn't a bad pick. But there were some other good names still available here, and any of these could easily have better years than a rookie receiver: Keenan Allen, Zay Flowers, Kyle Pitts, George Kittle, C.J. Stroud.
Round 7: George Pickens WR. I still don't have a QB, and Joe Burrow was available here, as well as Dak Prescott; so maybe adding a bench player here wasn't the best move. David Montgomery and Raheem Mostert were RBs available, if I wanted to add a bench RB instead.
Round 8: D'Andre Swift RB. Supposedly the starting RB for what most think will be a pretty good offense. Rhamondre Stevenson, Austin Ekeler, and Diontae Johnson were alternatives here.
Round 9: Rhamondre Stevenson RB. Well, he made it around the turn; so I took him as well. It should be noted that eight of the other drafters (probably computer-controlled at this time) were now taking kickers or defenses.
Round 10: Jordan Love QB. Based on how he finished last season, this low pick seems to validate waiting on taking a QB this year. Aaron Jones, Jonathon Brooks, and Chris Godwin were still on the board.
Round 11: Gus Edwards RB. I probably have too many RBs and should have taken Rashee Rice, Rome Odunze, or Jameson Williams here. Javonte Williams was also on the board.
Round 12: Jayden Daniels QB. Not sure that he will fall this low in a real draft. This one worked out for me, but I actually should have grabbed him in Round 11 in case Love bombs.
Round 13: Brian Thomas Jr. WR. Dart throw for last player pick. Christian Watson and Tua Tagovailoa were available here.
Round 14: Cowboys DEF.
Round 15: Matt Gay K.
